Summary
"The present global population of about 6 billion is expected to increase to about 9 billion by 2050. Most of this increase is likely to occur in developing countries, which are already facing the problems of hunger, malnutrition and environmental degradation. There is thus a pressing need to provide food and environmental security to an expanding population. This can be achieved by exploiting modern technological tools such as biotechnology to develop-transgenic crops to augment both the quantity and quality of the food produced." "During the last few years, area under transgenic crops has increased tremendously. At present, transgenic crops are grown in eighteen countries and over 68 million hectares, two-third of which is in developed countries and rest in developing countries. Recently, several ecological, economical and social concerns have been raised over their adoption. Therefore, we need to evolve strategies for development of transgenic crops which take into their potential benefits and possible concerns about their widespread commercial cultivation. The present book focuses on such critical issues in the development of transgenic crops, their problems and prospects, both in developed and developing countries." "The book will prove to be of immense use to all those who are concerned with pros and cons of transgenic crop protection. While stimulating further research in this vital area, it would provide a tool to pest management experts to guide them towards sustainable management of crop pests."--BOOK JACKET
