Summary
This research aims to determine the barriers to help-seeking among Chinese female victims of family violence, as well as available strategies to support this group of people. This research employed a qualitative methodology to achieve the research goal. Through a purposive sampling strategy, three practitioners were invited to participate in semi-structured interviews that focused on the barriers to help-seeking experienced by Chinese female victims and strategies devised to overcome the barriers. This study found three main barriers that prevent Chinese women from seeking help: cultural barriers (family shame and maintaining family harmony); interpersonal relationship barriers (Chinese women's dependency on men, negative reactions of others); and institutional barriers (lack of linguistically/culturally appropriate services and public promotions, and complicated service access processes). Strategies for service practitioners were also found: empowering Chinese women victims to achieve independence and self-determination; strengthening the awareness of family violence and available services in the Chinese community through culturally and linguistically competent services; and building good relationships with other professionals--Abstract
