Summary
In Making Room For Madness in Mental Health, Marcus Evans has brought vividly to life one of the most challenging areas of clinical practice - namely, work with "madness", in its many forms. Drawing on decades of experience of direct clinical work, supervision, and consultation, he asks, tellingly, what happened to the "illness" when mental disorders became sanitized by the term "mental health". He painstakingly unpicks the layers of defences (in both patients and staff) that obscure the "madness: or psychosis in a range of disorders: psychotic disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, self-harm, and hysteria. This is an unusual book in bringing together not just a range of clinical presentations but also complementary insights: those garnered whrough a career first in mental health nursing and then in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and those arising from clinical psychotherapy and psychoanalytic consultation and supervision. Marcus Evans makes a strong case for the importance of psychoanalytic supervision in mental health practice and its role in helping frontline staff to "tune in" to their patients' unconscious communications or the "psychotic wavelength. In so doing, he also makes the case for recognizing and confronting madness, and resisting the urge of so many in mantal health services to push madness out of sight as they try to persuade the patient to listen to reason -- Page viii
