Summary
Provides an overview of the physiological, psychological, and evolutionary aspects of touch. Compares our sense of touch with that of other animals and shows how humans are similar to elephants. Calculates the different sensitivities of the body's most receptive parts and explains how the density of touch sensors in the skin explains why some parts of the body seem to have a much lower pain threshold. Looks at experiments with electric shocks, painkillers, and hypnosis that demonstrate the brain's role in the experience of physical pain
