- Summary
- "While the professional sporting world endeavors to promote itself as environmentally friendly, Greenwashing Sport exposes its complicity in the global environmental crisis. Professional sports are revealed to be directly responsible for significant carbon footprints and ecological crimes, through stadium construction and energy use, player and spectator travel, animal mistreatment and media coverage, for example. The impact of sports associations on climate change is further compounded by their sponsorship deals with the gas and petroleum industries; imbuing those extractive corporations with a positive image by embedding them within the everyday pleasure of sport. Such activities amount to serious accusations of greenwashing. Toby Miller first walks us through the basic theoretical concepts and material histories of the environment and sports, the following chapters then scrutinise the motor racing industry, association football and the Olympic Games in turn, weighing up their environmental policies, their rhetoric around issues like conservation and sustainability and assessing their green credentials. The book concludes with a look to the role of the citizen, green citizenship and organic fan activism in promoting pro-environmental behaviour in sports. Touching on multiple disciplines, this is a must-read for students and researchers in media, communications and cultural studies and environmental studies" --
