Summary
On his second day in office, President Obama pledged to close the Guantanamo Detention Centre within a year. This documentary reports on why it has proved impossible for him to keep his promise. Hosted by Michael Portillo, British Defence Secretary in the 1990s, the team travel to Kuwait and Yemen to find out as definitively as possible what actually happened at the controversial Guantanamo Bay prison. Transcripts and reports of the extraordinary proceedings and interviews of the guards, the camp commander, US military defenders, and prosecutors paint a picture of some of the most dangerous men in the world. Alongside these men, Portillo discovers prisoners who appear to pose absolutely no threat to the West at all. Over the span of eight months, Portillo visits the prison camps, and travels to Yemen, Bermuda and Washington to investigate what could be done with the 240 remaining prisoners, some of whom are thought to be too dangerous to release, but impossible to successfully convict. As a former Defence Secretary, Portillo has first-hand experience of the political conflict between security and civil liberties. He looks at how the President has become stuck between a rock and a hard place
