Summary
"Mr. Hopkins investigated the role blogs played in allowing people to discuss political issues during the 2005 New Zealand General Election campaign. Since the evolution of newspapers, radio and television, conversations about politics have taken place in the mainstream media. However, the internet has changed these practices. Using a triangulated methodology, Mr. Hopkins examined the quality of rational-critical discussion and debate that occurred in the blogosphere leading up to the election. Public sphere theory was used as a measure of the communicative interactions. Among the findings it was shown that people did use the blogosphere to discuss politics. However, individuals were more aligned to political parties than they were to finding the best solution to an issue through a deliberative process. While bloggers were adamant they were not journalists, they were reliant on the media for content and they reflected a number of the negative traits found in mainstream media"--Massey University doctoral citation
