Summary
The focus in this project was on the cause of biofouling in a cow water treatment system. Cow water is a condensate of evaporated moisture collected during the production of milk powder, and a major source of waste in the dairy industry. It is generally regarded as "clean" and may not require waste treatment before releasing it into the environment. Biofilms were found in the inlet of the discharge pipes connected to a heat exchanger, which cools the cow water to 30°C before releasing to the environment. This resulted in an abnormal pressure drop across the heat exchanger, thus affecting the discharge rate into the river. The aim of the project was to investigate the microorganisms from cow water effluent that are capable of forming biofilm and their attachment on different surface materials which are commonly used in the dairy industry--Introduction
